Artist Blog // Mother Character Concept, Part Two

Mother Concept

Welcome to this week’s artist blog. Every week we hope to post an artist blog to show a couple of interesting art assets that may or may not make it into the final version of Through the Woods. These could be character models, environments, concept art, monsters, objects in the game world, and so on.

Here’s this week art blog:

This week is the second of a multi-part look at some concept art of the player character in Through the Woods. The next parts will be released at intervals over the coming weeks and months. Here’s a link to the mother character part one post, if you want to read it.

So here we have a couple of mother concept sketches and a matte painting by our new concept artist, Stian Schüller.

Mother Character

After looking at some slightly older concept work, it was decided that we needed to make the mother character look more ‘Norwegian’ and also more her correct age, which is mid-30s. Previous concept art showed the mother to be a little bit too young and perhaps too much like a model to be considered a realistic representation of a typical mid-30s Norwegian mother.

Of course, flying in the face of all that, Stian’s matte painting of the mother character here, to me, shows a really interesting mixture of expressions, as if she’s determined to find her missing son but also close to tears.

Ok that’s it for this week. We hope you enjoyed a little look at some of the mother character concept art. Keep your eyes out for next week’s artist blog and, in the coming weeks, for the third part of our lead character concept art.
